Sound Builder
Physical Interface for children • Industrial Design • 3D Printing
The Problem
The Goal
This project is designing a MP3 device for children from the ages from 6 to 14.
When it comes to designing for kids, there's one thing for sure – kids aren't just miniature adults. Rather, they present a completely different set of interaction, experience and usability conundrums. While some believe digital devices make for greater connections , there are also those who believe too much time with digital devices disconnects young children from face-to-face social activities, communications, and nature.
The goal of the project was applying User-centered Design into digital device for children . Therefore, I carefully put kids in control of their listening, exploring and play. And it aims to be without digital toxicity. So it won't disconnect the user from surrounding.
The Concept
a musical building blocks, toys and MP3 players for children from 2-5 years old.
Sound Builder' is a musical building-block, through which the user can explore and experience music. The product is made of plastic, in which an MP3 device is built with simple buttons and the interactive control system.
The user can influence music and melody through physical interaction. It won't block the communication of your children while 'Sound Builder' was built without monitor screen and headphone.
The product consists of two main parts:
MP3 control element is a MP3 Player in wobbly man toy shape. Therefore, consumers can control it interactively with physical action. For example, moving left and right is the control music track selection; moving forward and backward is the control of volume.
8 different types of multicolored small widget each with its own tone, 'Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La ....' (Note c, d, e, f, g, a ...)
Structure and Functions:
The creative control element are like LEGO blocks for children. They can be linked and connected in different ways in successions.
The creative controls will be controlled behind the MP3 Player to create the melody and import it into the MP3 Player.
